The Secret to Long Hair
For years we've been looking at new strategies to grow our hair, but the truth is hair growth is pointless if you can't maintain your length. How many girls have you seen with bleached hair, when they go back to the salon their roots have grown out quite a bit but it seems that their hair is the same length, nothing has changed. Her hair has grown, but it also hasn't. What is that all about?
The truth is no matter how long you grow your hair it will all render useless if you can't maintain your length, does this mean you shouldn't cut your split ends? Absolutely not, it's important to cut your split ends so they don't get worse, but if the secret to long hair isn't keeping the ends then what is it?
Keeping the middle healthy, but what does this mean?
There's a part of our hair that we use and abuse all the time but we don't pay much attention to, nor do we think of protecting. It's the part of the hair between the roots and the ends, the middle part if you will.
It's such a huge part of the hair and we often forget to care for it, we always put oil on our scalp and ends but what about the middle? Everything we do to this part of the hair affects how our ends will turn out, so how do we take care of our middle?
AVOID UPDOS
Avoid putting the hair in updos too much as it can cause the hair to stretch too much and possibly break, especially the super tight updos.
SLEEP IN SILK!
I've said this before and I'll say it again, sleep in silk! Satin is also acceptable but silk is the best of the best. If you can sleep in a silk bonnet, or just completely change your sheets to silk then do so, silk helps with the movement of the hair and avoids breakage, it moves with you, not against you.
HAIR MASK ONCE A WEEK
Hair masks aren't just for the ends, it's for the middle of the hair as well. You can buy a hair mask for your hair type or find a DIY hair mask recipe
AVOID HOT SHOWERS
Heat damage isn't just curling irons and hair dryers, hot water is still heat and it can damage your hair. Warm water is okay, but avoid hot.
RINSE CONDITIONER WITH COLD WATER
When your hair is in warm water the cuticles open, which means your hair is pretty vulnerable. When cold water hits the hair it closes the cuticle, which means the conditioner will be locked in, remember moisture is a huge part of maintaining your length.
USE LEAVE-IN CONDITIONER
This is the most important part! Even though you did all that work with conditioner, your hair still isn't in its best moisturized state, leave in conditioner will restore all that was lost in the shower.
Maintaining length is a lot harder than hair growth. Remember, consistency is key. Progress won't happen overnight, have patience.
