Christmas Eve: Celebrating Christ’s Birth

I often get asked why I am a Christian. For me, faith is deeply connected to how I see the world and how I live in it. God is the creator of everything, from the stars in the sky to the herbs growing in the soil. Science and faith are not at odds; they both reveal the incredible order, beauty, and purpose of creation. God made us to care for the earth and each other, to live in harmony with nature, and to honor the gift of life. Catholicism resonates with me the most because it offers a rich tradition of rituals, beauty, and connection to both the spiritual and the natural world. It even inspires my love of herbalism, which feels like a way to participate in God’s creation every day. One of my favorite saints to look to for guidance in daily life is Saint Hildegard of Bingen, who was known for her wisdom, devotion, and deep understanding of the healing power of plants.

But today is not about why I am a Christian. Today is about the birth of Christ, a moment that changed history and continues to inspire hope, joy, and love. Christmas is a reminder that God became one of us, that He entered the world humbly, and that every life is sacred. The story of Christ’s birth is simple but profound: a child born in a stable, visited by shepherds and wise men, bringing light into the world. It reminds us of the beauty of humility, generosity, and grace.

In Latin culture, and especially in Brazil and Peru, Christmas is celebrated with vibrant traditions that honor family, community, and faith. From nativity scenes (nacimientos) to midnight Mass (Misa de Gallo), these customs reflect the joy of gathering together and celebrating God’s gift to the world. Food, music, and prayer all come together to make Christmas a rich, sensory celebration that strengthens both family bonds and spiritual connection.

At Sinchi Vida, we honor these traditions by embracing the natural rhythms of life, the herbs that nourish our bodies, and the faith that nourishes our hearts. This Christmas, may your home be filled with peace, warmth, and gratitude for the gift of Christ’s birth.
